Raw Duck

EDIT - After having to close in November due to building issues, Raw Duck will be opening soon at a new location on Richmond Road.

This is an embarrassingly late blog post. I started a new job about 4 weeks ago so that has kept me a busy bee. As well as that the theft of my iphone which I still haven’t managed to replace means that my photo taking has also been a problem. Hopefully I will rejoin the smartphone world soon (though the novelty of a flippy phone did last a full 2 weeks).

Last Sunday, I asked the sister and Tom to have brunch with me so we could catch up after their 2 week holiday in France. They left the location up to me so after some googling we went for the new Raw Duck by Hackney Central Station.

Raw Duck is the second opening from those behind Duck Soup in Soho which I haven’t actually tried yet. From what I could gather the little sister is slightly smaller and more cafe/ wine bar rather than a proper restaurant.

I arrived eagerly waiting for my brunch. The menu on the board had a variety of choices including sweet choices, crumpets, toast... but for me brunch is all about the eggs. The egg choices included the Turkish fried egg served on toast with harissa and coriander for £3.75. Then they had a classic boiled egg and soldiers or a fried egg with iberico ham and peppers for a slightly steeper £7.

Amelia and Tom went for the Turkish Egg and I went for the egg and ham. When the plates arrived they were pretty as anything. The Turkish Egg was sizeable and for £3.75 a bargain. The only way to double it is just to order it twice as far as we could tell when Amelia started asking about an extra egg.

My egg and ham was very nicely presented and the ham was obviously seriously good quality... but where the hecky peck was my toast. When something costs £7 ie. nearly double the price of the other dish, I expect the egg to come with a bit of toast.

Raw Duck was nice and the food was good especially when you think that there doesn't actually seem to be an actual kitchen - just a toaster and a panini machine at the front. The quality of the ingredients is pretty clear and they get all their bread from E5 Bakery. I don’t think I will be revisiting for brunch - next time I come will be for a drink after work and a nibble on their snacky menu - I hear great things about the 'Dirty Bird' chicken sandwich.
